Leveling Up the Video Displays at a Super Venue
A recent, $40 million renovation of the Mercedes-Benz Superdome focused on upgrading the venue’s fan amenities. Improvements included enhanced suites, as well as upgraded audio and HVAC systems.
But the project’s featured attraction was a pair of jaw-dropping, end zone LED display boards.
Measuring 350-feet wide by 37-feet tall, these 16mm LED boards would be among the largest video displays in America. How large? Plans called for each board to be only ten feet shorter than the entire length of a football field (including the end zones).
After Broadmoor, LLC was named the project’s general contractor, Solomon Group was brought onboard to do what it has done for projects all over the Mercedes-Benz Superdome campus -- make it shine brighter than it had before. Our integration team had just completed work on the Smoothie King Center’s new LED ribbon board across the street, and was up for the challenge.
Solomon Group installed a custom, secondary support structure to the primary steel system that was added to the Superdome’s flat, interior wall surfaces. Our fabrication and installation teams positioned and welded the support structure’s beams off of the wall at different lengths in order to give the massive displays a curved appearance. Additionally, Solomon Group provided LED panel installation and data wiring services.
Replacing the video boards installed when the Dome was rebuilt following Hurricane Katrina, each new screen is eight times larger, presents high-definition video, and offers greater flexibility in the types of content that can be exhibited (such as fantasy football stats).
When the New Orleans Saints went marching into the Dome for the 2016-2017 season opener, they ran out onto the field under the third-largest video displays in the NFL.
