Building environments for the next great minds in tech

FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is an organization dedicated to developing young people into the next generation of innovators.

Of course, we became instant fans.

Solomon Group initially provided production services to FIRST’s Bayou Regional Robotics Competition. Today, we serve nearly a dozen regional events for the nonprofit all over America.

So when the organization decided to make sweeping changes to its annual championship event, they called Solomon Group.  In us, they saw a production partner that not only brought immense creativity and large-scale event experience to the table, but also one with a deep understanding of FIRST’s mission.

Our task?  Completely re-imagine the experience, layer every aspect with immersive technology, and execute it all at a high level.

Beginning in 2015, FIRST Championship transformed from a consolidated event into a multi-campus competition staged across five venues.  A new, Olympic-style model was introduced, which included opening and closing ceremonies at the Edwards Jones Dome, home of the St. Louis Rams.

Over 18,000 kids (ages 6-18) from 40 countries descended on the city, competing in teams using robots they had designed, built and programmed themselves.

While not part of the competition, Team Solomon Group had challenges as well.  Deliver a next-level, more theatrical production during a year of dramatic change.  Provide staging, lighting, video, audio and LED displays for all of the ceremonies and field competitions.  Manage the event’s complex production logistics, which involved competitions scheduled at several venues simultaneously across the four-day event.

In the end, Solomon Group delivered on its promise to make the FIRST Championship more entertaining for spectators, more exciting for competitors, more dynamic for online viewers and more valuable for sponsors.

And the smiles on the kids’ faces made all of the long hours well worth it.
