Recreating the French Quarter 1,000 miles away

Once upon a time, there was a small group of people who had fallen so deeply under the spell of New Orleans, they decided to have a sizeable piece of it recreated for a special celebration.  In the Midwest.

It was a tall order.  Destination Concepts was selected to design, create and produce this complex event and needed the right partner to help them deliver it.  One with the scenic design, fabrication and lighting expertise to replicate New Orleans’s iconic environments and create a theatrical experience for guests.  After a nationwide search, the obvious choice was Solomon Group.

DCi looked to Solomon Group to bring their vision to life by recreating a French Quarter street and courtyard environment inside of a 260-foot-long tent structure erected on a private estate.  Given the project’s accelerated timeline, there wasn’t a moment to spare.

The sheer size of the space called for nearly an entire city block of French Quarter scenery installed at the perimeter walls, including two-story facades with balconies, wrought ironwork, rooftop dormers, a custom grand staircase and more.  Even at that enormous scale, each piece was carefully detailed to look authentic.  There were also several, fully functional elements installed throughout the environment including hand-crafted street lanterns, authentic residential entry doors, Creole cottage shutters and a three-tiered concrete fountain in the middle of it all.

Our fabrication shop also custom-built several full-service bars, two elegant wine bars and a pair of rustic craft beer bars.  The Print Shop at Solomon Group provided a large-format, printed fabric backdrop for the stage end of the space.  And our production department designed and installed the systems to create the atmospheric lighting throughout the environment.

Upon entering the celebration, guests found themselves immersed in a multisensory New Orleans square, transported there by Destination Concepts' creative design, built from the ground up by Solomon Group’s unmatched team of designers, artists, craftsmen, technicians and project managers.
