Cox Sports Television (CST)

Drawing up a winning game plan for a regional network

When regional cable network Cox Sports Television needed a completely redesigned broadcast environment for its Louisiana studios, they turned to a national player that just happened to be in their own backyard.

Management for the 24-hour sports network had seen Solomon Group's design, fabrication and installation work on display during CBS's coverage of Super Bowl XLVII.  A few months later, CST officials got to see Solomon Group’s work firsthand when they visited the company's custom, ACE Award nominated exhibit booth at the 2013 NAB Show in Las Vegas.

CST’s existing studio set had grown nearly five years old.  The network wanted a fresh broadcast environment that was a departure -- in both design and function -- from their existing set.  It had to be versatile enough to work for CST as well as the entire Cox Communications Louisiana operation.

Studio space and the project’s budget were limited.  Time was a challenge as well, since the network needed the new set completed in time for CST’s exclusive coverage of the New Orleans Saints preseason games.

Solomon Group’s in-house production designer went to work, creating an ingenious desk system that could be configured to accommodate multiple combinations of anchors and studio guests.  By choosing certain materials we were able to bring some much-needed warmth back to the set.  Integrated, customizable scenic lighting was added both to the main desk and throughout the background, allowing producers to easily change the look of the environment between shows or for branding purposes.

Fans of CST’s professional and collegiate sports coverage got their first look at the network’s reimagined set in early August, in time for the first kickoff of the 2013 Saints preseason.
